How to make Tomato Powder & Dorito Dust for Popcorn

The 90’s junk food movement ruined me and many in my age group. I’m not talking about the health ramifications. No, something deeper. I am now a millennial mom trying to recreate the junk food I grew up on, but in a healthier version so my children can experience those delicious flavors. But who am I kidding, its just not the same.

That’s where tomato powder comes into the picture. Every summer I can tomato sauce and I am left with skins and seeds. I normally give them to the chickens, but this year I dehydrated the skins and seeds in my Bench Food Dehydrator and then pulverized them into a powder. I used a fine mesh strainer to sift out the seeds.

What was left was a vibrant red tomato powder I could add to soups and seasonings. My main reason for making tomato powder was for creating a homemade Dorito dust that we could add to popcorn.

The verdict came through and we all agreed it wasn’t exactly the addicting flavor of Doritos but the seasoning had a great flavor that can spice up plain popcorn when cravings kick in.

Try it and tell me what you think. By the way, my commercial dehydrator can get a huge batch of food done all at one time. This time of year we are using it to preserve tomatoes, pears, granola, berries, and herbs. Use code WELLFOLK to save 10% on any of their dehydrators.
